Executive Functioning Assessment

At Learning Solutions, we understand the critical role that executive functioning plays in daily life, influencing everything from decision-making and problem-solving to time management and organizational skills. Our comprehensive Executive Functioning Assessment goes beyond measures used for diagnostic purposes. It is designed to evaluate these essential cognitive processes, providing valuable insights into an individual’s strengths and areas for improvement and our process includes coaching to help implement recommendations.

What is Executive Functioning?

Executive functioning refers to a set of mental skills that include working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. These skills are necessary for managing oneself and one’s resources to achieve a goal. They help us plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.

Who Can Benefit from an Executive Functioning Assessment?

Our assessment is ideal for adults who are juggling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and need to make the most of the time they have. For those who are struggling to find the balance between efficiency and life satisfaction. This may be college and graduate students, early career professionals, parents, mid and late career professionals. who may be experiencing difficulties in areas such as:

  • Planning and organizing tasks
  • Managing time effectively
  • Maintaining focus and attention
  • Regulating emotions and behavior
  • Adapting to changing situations
  • Problem-solving and decision-making

What to Expect During the Assessment

Our Executive Functioning Assessment involves a series of standardized tests and activities tailored to evaluate various aspects of executive function. This in depth look at an individual’s unique executive functions is not considered “medically necessary” and, thus, is not covered by insurance. However, this assessment can be added to an insurance based evaluation as an out-pocket-cost to provide additional insight and build off the results from assessments that are covered by insurance.

The assessment typically includes:

Executive Functioning Focused Consultation

A detailed discussion with one of our experienced clinicians with expertise in executive functions to gain a comprehensive understanding of how executive functioning challenges emerge in your daily life in order to create a support plan and inform the assessment plan.

Standardized Testing

A battery of tests designed to measure different components of executive functioning, such as cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memory.

Behavioral Observations

Behavioral measures completed the individual as well as close others to understand how executive functions are applied to real life tasks and scenarios and how those compare to others your age.

Feedback Session

A comprehensive review of the assessment results, highlighting strengths and identifying areas that may require support or intervention. When added on to another type of evaluation, results are integrated with other evaluation findings to form a comprehensive understanding from multiple professionals’ experience of the individual.

This collaborative approach is core to our practice and has been shown to be best practice in gaining a comprehensive understanding of how difficulties emerge in each individual’s life.

Post-Assessment Support

Following the assessment, we provide a detailed report with personalized recommendations. Recommendations will include strategies for improving executive functioning in the individual’s life. Referrals to other specialists or suggestions for accommodations in educational or workplace settings may also be a part of recommendations as appropriate.
